 Session 23: Slaying the Bishop

The Cult

     It seemed that the dragon was not going to come after them, so the party went down the final level. Bean went to the first floor to stay with Fred. Eldon cast dispel magic on the door and Ronin picked the lock. Inside they found a Flind (CR 9 Gnoll), 2 Gnoll Flesh Gnawers (CR 1 Gnoll), 3 Cult Fanatics (CR 2 Humanoid), a Shield Guardian (CR 7 Contstruct), and the Bishop (Mage CR 6 Humanoid).

     The Bishop spoke: "You foolish adventurers always seem to be meddling in my affairs. You make my life difficult. I think it's time that stopped."

     To which Eldon responded, "It will. With your death."

     Ignoring her, the Bishop continued, "First, you halted my slave gathering scheme, leaving with just this one." He gestured to a woman in rags. "The Archmage naturally got the first batch, so I'm left with this one. That's hardly fair. Then, you began directly interfering with my operations. Now, you come into my home and ruin my experiments? Those doors you so carelessly opened were... I digress. Why monologue to those I'm about to kill? Your games are at an end now. Good-bye and good riddance!"

     The fanatics opened a portal, out of which came a Glabrezu (CR 9 Fiend). A fight ensued. The Flesh Gnawers were easily dispatched. Ronin killed the Flind. The Fanatics were not hard to kill. During the fight, Blake, Greg, Larry, Ronin, Reginald, and Eldon all sustained heavy injuries, particularly from the Bishop who hit them with a Cone of Cold and a Fireball. The Bishop also hit the Glabrezu with his spells. So, the Glabrezu and the Shield Guardian fought each other. Ronin killed the Bishop, by running him through with his glaive, lifting him up off the ground, and slamming him into the ground. The Shield Guardian froze at that point.

     The Glabrezu then attacked Eldon, hitting her with both fists and both pincers, knocking her unconscious and picking her up with one of the pincers. Reginald tried and failed to leap up and use cure wounds. Reginald also tried to use Bingus's Hand to pull the pincer open, but he was unable to. Greg climbed up onto the Glabrezu's shoulder, and tried and failed to pry its pincer open with his sword. In fact, the sword broke on a critical fail. Then, Ronin use a 2nd level Divine Smite on his glaive, jumped up and slashed off the pincer arm and the fist arm on its left side. This was the pincer holding Eldon. Eldon fell into Reginald's catch. Greg jumped down.

     Larry rushed forward shouting, "Nobody touches my halfling!" He then belched a 90 foot cone of fire that disintegrated the Glabrezu, the Shield Guardian, and the Bishop's body, barely avoiding the party members. After they healed Eldon, Larry revealed that he had been the dragon Bralzrog all along. They went upstairs to find Fred had constructed makeshift doors to keep anything bad out. They took a long rest.

     When they exited the dungeon, they found a Vampire and 17 Vampire Spawn waiting for them. The Vampire spoke: "Hello, adventurers. The Blood Fiend sends his regards. I must applaud you. You have purged the Demon's Maw from your pitiful country. Not that it matters much. With the things that have been set in motion, Gaia will last only a few years more at the most. You will not go further. I have come to put an end to your nuisance. Say your last prayers before I end your meaningless lives!"

     After powerful, yet futile attempts to harm the vampires, Reginald realized there was only one hope of saving his friends' lives. He called upon the power of Bingus (his deity). Bingus disintegrated the Vampires in a burst of radiant energy as he came down to Mythania. Unfortunately, the main vampire ran Reginald through with a sword just before he disintegrated. 

     So, the fallen Sir Reginald Buford Jameson Jr. Esquire III the Great was whisked away to Bingus Land, and the Avatar of Bingus joined the party. The Avatar of Bingus is a Tabaxi Pact of the Great Old One Warlock. His patron is Bingus. In other words, he is his own patron. Don't question it. All hail the glory of Bingus.
